Catherine Elliott, Cancer Research UK, Joseph M. DeSimone, Stanford University, and Brian Druker, Oregon Health & Science University.
Don Listwin and Antonis Antonious, the Listwin awardee for his major contributions to the understanding of the genetic basis of common cancers and the development of cancer risk prediction models.
The Canary Center had the great pleasure of hosting the 2024 Early Detection of Cancer Conference in San Francisco from October 22-24. Among the most established and renowned international meetings on early detection worldwide, the conference has grown to host 350 participants from Europe, Canada, and the United States. This annual meeting is a partnership between the Canary Center, Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU), and Cancer Research UK. The next conference will be held in Portland in October 2025, hosted by OHSU.
Cancer early detection in underserved communities
Early detection and equitable treatment can significantly reduce cancer mortality today. We have effective screening methods for lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. However, these screenings are not consistently applied, leaving many people who should be tested—such as the poor, uninsured, and those facing barriers to healthcare—without access to these vital services. Additionally, when screening tests do detect early-stage cancer, many patients still do not receive the appropriate care they need. The Canary Center is contributing to future efforts to bring cancer early detection to underserved communities in the Bay Area.
